Accessing v2i file from 2009

I need a solution

I have a .v2i backup file made in 2009 from a machine that is now long dead.  I would like to be able to at least inspect the contents of this file.  So far, following advice found in this forum and other places, I have tried:

  • "Ghost Explorer" program - doesn't work as the file is not a .gho
  • Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 - produces error ED80001F: "This recovery point file uses a form of compression (131072) that is not supported by this version of the  product on this platform".

Per https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH55857.html,

here are two possible solutions for this issue.

The first solution is to restore the older compressed image with BESR 7.0 or earlier.

The second solution is to convert the backups (images) created in BESR 6.5, 7.0 and Live State Recovery 3.0, 6.0 with medium compression to a different compression format before the image can be restored in BESR 8.0.  Image Browser (tool in older versions) can copy an older image with medium compression to a new backup file using high compression or no compression.

Before I give up on my old backup file altogether -  assuming "BESR 7.0" is a (superseded) product, is there any way to obtain it?   Or does anyone have other ideas on how I can get into this file?

TIA

Best way to replace current backup disk with new disk

$

I need a solution

(1) I currently have disk M: where I backup my files to.

(2) I have a new larger disk (currently I: and different label than M:) which I now want to use for my backup files.

I have no problem moving existing backup files to the new disk with SSR, but the caveat is that when done I want to change M: to say Z: and then change I: to M:  The reason is, of course, that I want my backup drive to continue to be drive letter M: with my new backup drive.

What would be the best way to do this without causing the backup files to be orphaned.

Thanks for the help -- David

Speed Up Recovery Time

I need a solution

When creating a backup of our system(s), at most it will take 30 minutes.  When restoring that data to a new drive (from a network location), it can take almost 48 hours (depending on the size of the backup).  Are there some configuration changes that I can make that will speed up the restoration time? Our largest drive is 500GB, but only 80GB of it is being used; all of the other drives are smaller with even less of the drive being used.  Even for our laptop with a 120GB SSD, it takes at least 14 hours to complete the recovery process.

Automatically mount a share while booting into the Symantec Recovery Disc boot environment

I need a solution

I am trying to figure out how to mount a sharing while the automatically network configuration process is happening during the boot-up process into the SRD recovery environment. I have tried putting  net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user within each if block, and the disc continues to skip the share mounting process. Below is the AutoNetwork.cmd script (found in the BOOT.WIM file, in Windows\Shell\AutoNetwork.cmd), and the changes that I have made (the net use command snippet):

@echo off

:AutoNetwork

        call %ShellPath%\FindDrive.cmd ?:\VProRecovery\VProRecovery.net FoundDrive
        if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
            %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:\VProRecovery\VProRecovery.net -preferdhcp
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
            exit 0
        )

        call %ShellPath%\FindDrive.cmd ?:\VProRecovery\AutoNetwork.xml FoundDrive
        if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
            %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:\VProRecovery\AutoNetwork.xml
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
            exit 0
        )

        call %ShellPath%\FindDrive.cmd ?:\VProRecovery\AutoRestore.xml FoundDrive
        if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
            %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:\VProRecovery\AutoRestore.xml
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
            exit 0
        )

        REM Look for AutoNetwork.xml file at Srd root
        call FindDrive.cmd ?:\AutoNetwork.xml FoundDrive
        if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
            %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:\AutoNetwork.xml
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
            exit 0
        )

        REM Look for AutoNetwork.xml file in Srd Shell location (where FindDrive.cmd is run)
        call FindDrive.cmd ?:AutoNetwork.xml FoundDrive
        if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
            %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:AutoNetwork.xml
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
            exit 0
        )

    REM If above files are not found in any of drives then look AutoNetwork.xml in Srd folder
    call %ShellPath%\FindDrive.cmd ?:\Srd\AutoNetwork.xml FoundDrive
    if not "%FoundDrive%" == "" (
        %SystemRoot%\System32\RunDll32.exe %ShellPath%\SreNet.dll,Execute -start -auto %FoundDrive%:\Srd\AutoNetwork.xml
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
        exit 0
    )
net use j: \\server\shareName password /User:domain\user
    exit 0

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But this does not work. I still have to manually connect to the share each time. Where is the best place to put the net use command within the file AutoNetwork.cmd? Or, is there a way to process custom commands to run after SRD has fully loaded up the GUI?

In addition, how can I tell SRD to automatically accept the EULA?

Install SSR 2013 R2 run failed

I need a solution

hi Symantec sensei

Currently I'm struggling with installation of plug-ins, agents, SSR 2013 R2 with user interface on the end-point stations(200 stations) from SSR Management console (7.5.3153). Mostly it goes good, but some stations ignore the installation of “Package for Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 with user interface”. In the agent history, it shows that “Install SSR…..Run failed”. I checked the obstacles, which could stop the installation – antivirus manipulations (exceptions, complete uninstall, etc.), win os firewall settings/rules (permit all in all directions), tried to Update Distribution Points, manually initiate the installation/downloading the package from Agent (CommonInstaller.exe. It starts for a sec and then disappears).

PS: is it possible to install this package manually in offline mode? tried to find it, but without result

Kindly ask You to help in this. The LOG file from Agent is attached.

SSR 2013 backup failing, need debug logging

I need a solution

Our backups will fail every month or so.  The error message is below:

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of System Reserved (*:\), (C:\), d-drive (D:\), e-drive(E:\).

Error E0BB00B5: Snapshot error

Error EBAB03F1: Following Operating System error occurred while performing requested operation: 'OS error 2147754760.'. (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)

I have googled and searched the Symantec forums regarding these error messages and nothing works. Our VSS writers are all stable and in good condition, the shadow copies are only on C: and they have been creating fine (7 am and 12 pm every weekday, 50 GB of storage, oldest copy is successfully deleted).

Windows Small Business Server 2011 (which is Windows Server 2008 R2).

SSR 2013 Small Business Server Edition 11.0.2.49853

Our backups are on weekdays, start at 9 PM and finish around 6:50 AM. We are backing up to external USB drives, a different one for each weekday.

Nothing seems to be causing these failures; it happens with different USB drives, and with no clearly connected entries in the Event Viewer that have happened each time.

I can't tell at what point in the backup process the backup is failing, that is, what file the backup fails on. How do I turn on enhanced logging for SSR 2013 so I can see what files are successfully copied during the backup process and at what time? I have only so far found instructions for Backup Exec, not SSR 2013.

I need a solution

Hi all,

I upgraded two installations of SSR 2013 to SSR 2013 R2 recently (all hotfixes applied). The backups are running successful, but the e-mail notifications have become weird. I'm getting these:

Description: Result (0x6c8f043d 39 VPRO_INFO_COUNT_EXCEEDED_BACKUP_DELETED Args [1] Arg (0xbab000d 46 E:\SystemRecovery\SRVSBS\SRVSBS_D_Drive227.v2i);)<9 1.0-*-*-* >

Or

Description: Result (0x6c8f1f7f 31 VPRO_INFO_SCHEDULED_BACKUP_FULL Args [1] Arg (0xbab000d 3 *:\);)<9 1.0-*-*-* >

There seems to be a problem of some sort, but I can't make heads or tails of it.

Has anyone ever seen this?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Bye,

Tim

Ghost 11.5 creating multiple .GHS files

I need a solution

I'm trying to back up an image using Ghost 11.5 through WinPE.  When I back up the image to a local drive (such as an external hard drive), it creates one .GHO file as it should.

However, when I back up to a network share it creates a bunch of .GHS files exactly 2 GB each.  I read somewhere that Ghost does this because of a network limitation.

Is there any way around this?  I'd really like it to back up one file to my network share.  I'm not using a Ghostcast server.

SSR 2013 "Symantec System Recovery service terminated unexpectedly"

I need a solution

Hi,

I've been using SSR 2013 on my Win7/64 desktop for a couple years now and it's been working fine. I recently (six weeks ago) upgraded to v11.0.2.49853 (which is SSR 2013 SP2 I believe) after installing a Synology DS414slim appliance (to offload some of the internal desktop RAID1 storage). This device is set up as an iSCSI target, which was necessary to get SSR to see it as a source device for backup. SSR backs up this source to a NAS destination (a Seagate BlackArmor appliance).

This seemed to work fine initially but lately (the last month) I've been getting vprosvc.exe terminations whenever I try to backup this drive (this happens consistently and may have coincided with the SP2 update?):

Faulting application name: VProSvc.exe, version: 11.0.2.49853, time stamp: 0x52ad3597
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7601.18869, time stamp: 0x556366f2
Exception code: 0xc0000374
Fault offset: 0x00000000000bfc22
Faulting process id: 0x2b30
Faulting application start time: 0x01d0ce5fda3c58c4
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Recovery\Agent\VProSvc.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: 93b31272-3b37-11e5-82d1-180373b39665

What can I do to troubleshoot and/or fix this?

Note: backup jobs for the internal desktop drives is working fine. Other accesses to the iSCSI drive on the DS414slim seem to work fine (i.e., Explorer and other applications that use data on this drive all seem fine).

Thanks in advance,

-David

PS: I've been wondering why there's been no update to SSR 2013 for a while (this software was originally released way back in 2012 I believe). After browsing around the site I see that there is an SSR 2013 *R2* version. What is this? Is it different than SSR 2013 SP2? Can I upgrade to this version?

Spec request 4 latest full backups (no Incremental)

I need a solution

Hi Gents

The clients' technical request in specification is to provide 4 latest full backups on quaterly basis (every four months). No Incremental backups in between. So 4 latest full backups must be available.

Problem

We are struggling to find how to do that with SSR 2013. The only way to create a quaterly schedule is to make an Intependant Backup in Jobs and Tasks and schedule it for every four months' backup schedule. Could You explain how to keep these latest 4 full backup (like Recovery Points)? Is there an Option to make such the task running in this way? Right now, the created Full backup is overwritten by the next "quaterly" full backup instance.

thank You in advance

I need a solution

PS: no Ghost 15 option found to post in, my apologies for "misposting".

I installed W10Pro, after full setup, I made a ghost of the drive, all is good.

Ran into trouble with W10Pro, so backup restore needed.

CD in drive, boot, restore computer, select file, start... death by error.

The error told me it could not restore to the drive, no such drive found.

Manual check: file address tells me C:\, target tells me C:\.

Not a bloody clue why it fails, both are correct in Source/Target address, but another death at start restore, same result.

Clever as I am, I think to myself: why not open the target drive through Ghost options, remove all files manually, and simply copy all from inside the backup file.

Plenty simple, I'd reckon.

But here's the snag: delete went troublesome, often an error "cannot delete file, file not existent".
So??????

What is the problem, it was meant to be deleted anyway.

This error stopped the whole process, no skip file, no resume, it stopped.

Restart C:/ delete, and again, and again, and... you get the point.

Once C:\ was empty, open backup file, copy, back to C;\, paste....

Pop-up tells me: COPYING, perfect, rght?

Well no...

See, for the past 4 hours, Ghost is scanning the source file.

Now, I used ghost quite a few times, a backup never took more than 40 minutes, verify included.

So, copying the file content should not take 40minutes, not to mention 4+bloody hours of just scanning, not even copying.

Is there something wrong?

Workaround this?

ADDENDUM:

Ghost finally figured it's time to copy.

Well not quite: error e7d1000e: file/folder does not exist.

Wait a sec, I SEE the folder and files myself, so what gives? O_O

It's driving me nuts, really.

Thank you aforehand.

I need a solution

QUESTION NO.1. when we use Jobs & Tasks, and repeat the backup job by one hour(example), It overrides on the Recovery Point & Do not create new RECOVERY POINT. Case is same in both(destination & offsite destination).

We have checked option to “create sub folder  for each computer” for DESTINATION (where all computer’s backups will be stored.)

How Can we have 4 back-ups created for each 1 Hour  scheduled (example) by using JOBS & TASKS- Independent Back-Up. This is to check that, we have multiple backups available to restore.

QUESTION NO.2. The Requirement is every 3months  back-up With 4 latest back-up available. How can we achive it by using Jobs and Tasks(with Independent Back-up) as Jobs & tasks do not give option to mention the "number of Recovery Points to Limit". Please share if any one has the solution.

Looking for a solution. Hope the Requirement is not unique.

SSR 2013 SRD Fails Boot on system with PERC H310 Raid Controller

I need a solution

I'm running SSR 2013 on a Dell 64 bit Precision T3600 independent workstation with a Xeon ES-1650.0 CPU, 16 GB of RAM and containing a PERC H310 Raid adapter that controlls two 1 TB HDs currently running as independant C: and D: drives (i.e., in non-RAID configuration).  2013 succdessfully backs up the C: (boot) drive to D: in weekly sets with offsite copy.  However, attempting to restore C: from image using the 2013 SRD runs into an immediate probllem.  When attempting to boot from the CD/DVD drive (preceded by the H310 boot from bios), even before the Windows logo appears, I get a blue screen stating:

"Your PC needs to be repaired.  There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device.  Error Code 0xC00000017."

Attempting to use Lights Out produces the same result..  I attempted to customize the SRD with the H310 driver (percsas2.sys), but the SRD Wizard would not accept the .sys file.

So I have two questions:  1. Could the problem be caused by something other than the H310?  2. If the probllem is the H310 controller (none of my other systems without controllers have SRD recovery problems), is there a fix short of removing the H310?
